Brazil and Chile have secured places in the beach volleyball quarterfinals at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games following victories in the men's round of 16 on Monday, 2 November, as host nation Senegal suffered a double elimination.

At Saly Beach West, Brazil's Gabriel Campos and Bruno Fellipe Lobo Silva Souza overcame Sierra Leone 2-0 to continue their pursuit of a podium finish.

Despite challenging conditions characterised by strong winds and overcast skies, the Brazilian pair adapted well to the weather.

“There was a lot of wind but we worked well with that,” Gabriel said, explaining that the cooler conditions suited their playing style better than intense sunshine.

Chile also progressed after Gael Arias Saldias and Francisco Farias Valdivia defeated Senegal's Mouhamed Moustapha Sidibe and Souleymane Seck Ciss 2-0.

The Chilean duo credited their preparations in Joao Pessoa, Brazil, where they trained in windy conditions to improve their adaptability.

Senegal's medal hopes end

It was a difficult afternoon for the hosts, with both Senegalese beach volleyball teams eliminated from the competition.

In the women's round of 16, Aminata Tine and Nafi Segnane lost 2-0 to Mexico's Celia Yazbeth Lopez Higuera and Angela Perez Araujo.

Tine admitted that their opponents had demonstrated a higher technical level, despite Senegal giving everything on the court.

“We gave our everything but the technical level of the opponents was better than ours,” she said.

The defeat brought an emotional end to Senegal's women's beach volleyball campaign, with Tine visibly struggling to hold back tears.

“It's very difficult to be eliminated. It hurts. You come here, you do everything, and then you leave,” she added.

With Brazil and Chile advancing to the quarterfinals, attention now turns to the remaining contenders as the beach volleyball competition approaches its decisive stages at Dakar 2026.
