Brazil's Clarisse Vallim delivered a memorable performance at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, defeating Anastasiia Dobrovolskaia in the women's -78kg final to secure gold on Tuesday, 3 November.

The 16-year-old overcame a challenging contest at the Dakar Expo Centre, capitalising on her opponent's mistake to secure a historic victory for Brazil.

Vallim described the triumph as a dream come true, highlighting the sacrifices and determination that helped her reach the top of the podium.

However, her journey towards Olympic glory began a decade ago when she watched judo during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

At around six years old, Vallim was inspired by Brazilian judoka Rafaela Silva, whose success became a powerful source of motivation and representation for the young athlete.

Seeing Silva achieve success on the Olympic stage changed her perception of the sport and encouraged her to pursue judo.

Her father also played an important role in nurturing her ambition, regularly reminding her of Silva's journey and demonstrating that sporting dreams were achievable.

Ahead of the final in Dakar, Vallim relied on music and positive thoughts to manage the pressure, drawing motivation from a song titled Everything Will Be Alright.

Her approach paid off as she secured the women's -78kg title, turning childhood inspiration into Youth Olympic gold.

Meanwhile, Lithuania's Tajus Babaicenko claimed the other judo gold medal awarded on Tuesday, defeating Uzbekistan's Jurabek Eshpulatov in the men's -100kg final.

The final day of judo competition at Dakar 2026 concluded with 32 National Olympic Committees represented in the medal standings, each finishing with one medal.
