JUBA, South Sudan – South Sudan International, who is the Yei Joint Stars captain Mary Anger has called for increased support for women's football in South Sudan, saying financial constraints and the demands of balancing education with football continue to hinder the growth of the women's game.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sports Hunter, the skipper said female footballers face unique challenges that often affect their ability to fully concentrate on training and competition.
"There are so many challenges affecting the ladies. Women have a lot of responsibilities and sometimes you find that some players are unable to concentrate fully. Many are also attending school, which makes it difficult to focus entirely on football. Another major challenge is the lack of financial support affecting women's teams in South Sudan. We hope sports lovers and well-wishers will come forward and support women's football," Mary Anger said.
The Super Queen's captain noted that despite the obstacles, players remain committed to representing their clubs and the country, driven by a passion to see women's football continue to grow.
Her remarks come as Yei Joint Stars prepare for another campaign in the CAF Women's Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers, where the South Sudan champions will be seeking to make history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Women's football in South Sudan has made significant strides in recent years, highlighted by the launch of the country's first Women's Premier League and the continued participation of clubs such as Yei Joint Stars in regional competitions.
However, players and officials continue to stress that greater investment, sponsorship, and institutional support are essential to unlocking the full potential of the women's game.
The winger's appeal adds to the growing calls for stakeholders, corporate partners, and football supporters to invest in women's football and create an environment where female players can thrive both on and off the pitch.
