JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN — When conflict disrupted football activities in Sudan, Zahra Ali refused to let circumstances bring her journey in the game to a halt.
The Sudanese international assistant referee, affiliated with the Sudan Football Association (SFA) and recognised at FIFA and CAF level, moved to South Sudan, where she continued officiating during the 2025/26 season.
Ali featured as an assistant referee in competitions organised by the Juba Football Association (JFA) and the South Sudan Premier League, bringing her experience to the South Sudanese game while maintaining her career on the touchline.
With the 2026/27 South Sudan Premier League season set to begin, Ali is preparing to continue officiating in South Sudan.
Her journey is significant beyond the results and match statistics.
At a time when conflict has made it difficult for many football professionals in Sudan to continue their work, Ali has found an opportunity to remain connected to the sport she serves.
Her presence in South Sudan also highlights the growing links between football communities on both sides of the border, demonstrating how the sport can provide a bridge even during challenging times.
