DAKAR - The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has officially launched the International Beach Volleyball Referee Candidate Course (IRCC) in Dakar, Senegal, as part of efforts to strengthen officiating standards across the continent.
The course, which began on 7 August 2026, has brought together 25 referee candidates from across Africa for an intensive programme designed to prepare the next generation of internationally certified beach volleyball officials.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the volleyball and Olympic movements, with Senegal Volleyball Federation President Amadou Sene welcoming participants and reaffirming the country’s commitment to the development of beach volleyball ahead of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
Representing Senegal’s National Olympic and Sports Committee, Technical Director Avelino Monteiro highlighted the importance of referees in promoting fair play, integrity and excellence in sport, stressing that investing in officials’ education is key to the growth of beach volleyball.
Course Director Andre Trotter said the programme combines theoretical lessons with practical on-court assessments, giving candidates the opportunity to improve their technical knowledge and officiating skills required at international level.
Representing the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), Thomas Liechti reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to developing quality referees through continuous education and training programmes across Africa.
The course was officially opened by Sports Inspector Jack, representing Senegal’s Minister of Youth and Sports, who described the initiative as an important investment in the future of African beach volleyball and encouraged participants to maintain professionalism and high standards.
The CAVB programme forms part of wider efforts to build technical capacity ahead of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, with candidates set to undergo classroom sessions, practical evaluations and court assessments as they pursue international beach volleyball referee certification.
