Al Nil FC are one step away from achieving a historic milestone as they prepare to face first-division outfit Viva Star FC in the semi-finals of the Juba Football Association (JFA) South Sudan Cup today at Munuki Playground.

The second-division side, coached by Rami Gabriel, have enjoyed an impressive cup campaign, demonstrating their attacking quality and ability to compete against higher-division opponents. However, with a place in the final at stake, they face one of their toughest examinations yet.

Al Nil began their journey with a 2-1 victory over third-division side Munuki City, with Kenyi and Ramson getting on the scoresheet.

They subsequently announced their arrival as serious contenders in the Round of 32, eliminating first-division side Gudele FC with a convincing 2-0 victory. Jeffrey was the difference-maker, scoring both goals to send his team into the next round.

Their momentum continued in the Round of 16, where they overcame newly promoted second-division side Al Nusur FC by another 2-0 scoreline, thanks to goals from Kenyi and Zakaria.

Their most dramatic performance, however, came in the quarter-finals, where Gabriel's men edged first-division side Nyakuron FC in a thrilling 5-4 encounter.

Jeffrey, midfielders Zakaria, Dal and Fuad, alongside centre-back Alberto, all found the net in an entertaining nine-goal contest that secured Al Nil's place in the last four.

Jeffrey holds the key

Much of Al Nil's attacking ambition will once again revolve around their star forward Jeffrey, who has emerged as one of the team's most influential performers in the competition.

His brace against Gudele FC and another important contribution in the quarter-final victory over Nyakuron underline his ability to deliver in crucial moments.

Against a Viva Star defence that has yet to concede in the tournament, Jeffrey's movement, attacking instincts and finishing could prove decisive if Al Nil are to reach their first-ever final.

Defensive concerns for Gabriel

While Al Nil have demonstrated impressive attacking firepower, their defensive organisation remains an area requiring attention.

Conceding four goals in their quarter-final encounter against Nyakuron FC will be a concern for Gabriel, particularly ahead of a meeting with a Viva Star side that has scored nine goals without conceding.

The Al Nil defence will need greater discipline, concentration and coordination to contain the Fighters' attacking threat while avoiding the defensive lapses that made their quarter-final encounter so unpredictable.

Viva Star's perfect defensive record presents another challenge, meaning Al Nil must find the right balance between attacking ambition and defensive responsibility.

With El Merriekh FC already through to the final, Al Nil have an opportunity to join them and write a new chapter in their cup history.

For Gabriel and his players, the mission is clear: maintain their attacking confidence, tighten their defensive structure and overcome another first-division opponent.

Can Jeffrey inspire Al Nil FC to another giant-killing performance and a historic first final appearance, or will Viva Star FC maintain their perfect defensive record and end the second-division side's remarkable journey?
